EnDev Liberia promotes the improved cook stove Red Fire Pot (RFP). The RFP is an improved charcoal stove adapted to the cooking conditions, needs and customs of Liberian households.
EnDev supports the creation of a viable local market and local production of the RFP - with the objective to strengthen safe, healthy, economic and green cooking solutions for Liberian households, institutions and enterprises. Further, the RFP enables the creation of green jobs.
The Red Fire Pot has five major advantages compared to a traditional stove:
Innovative technology:
The RFP works with a “two-power system”:
1.) It uses the radiation heat of the burning charcoal, and
2.) Burns the unused gases of the charcoal in a second combustion process with the help of a secondary air supply which significantly reduces the emission of harmful toxic gases for the cook and the environment
Local Production:
GIZ/ EnDev organizes regular training workshops for the producers of the RFP. The aim of the training is to orient local craftsmen and women in the effective and high quality production of the RFP.
Producers are supported by EnDev to become independent enterprises. The EnDev incentive model is based on non-monetized performance incentives. The more RFPs the producer sells to retailers or end-users the more ‘Become a Champion’ (BC) Points he/she can collect and choose an item valuable for production, scaling-up or sales.
The marketing strategy includes planning of the campaign, raising awareness on radio and TV, advertising, public relations with partners and organisation of selling events with cook shows at local markets.
It also involves managing the production of marketing materials, including posters, flyers, and radio jingles and TV spots. The objective is to create an effective market for the locally trained producers and retailers respectively and to sensitize users on the related health, environmental and gender issues.
Marketing events are conducted by producers and retailers with EnDev support. EnDev’s approach is to use e.g. radio time as reward for best sellers.
Consumers Feedback:
In general the feedback is very positive and the users emphasize the fast cooking and reduced charcoal consumption as the main advantages. They underline that the amount of money spent on charcoal per meal is cut by 50 to 75% using the new stove as compared to the normal coal-pot.
Objective. Improve access to renewable, cheap and sustainable energies for households and institutions. Assist to improve health, learning, employment and production. We work on small and larger (LINKS: for the following sub categories) solar systems for schools and clinics, improved cooking stoves, solar lamps, solar dryers and small electric grids.
Approach. Energising Development (EnDev) (https://energypedia.info/wiki/Liberia_Energy_Situation) is multi-donor financed; it is thus part of a global initiative implemented by the German International Cooperation (GIZ) and financed by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation (BMZ), the Directorate-General for International Cooperation of the Netherlands (DGIS), United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
Liberia only recently joined the group of now 24 countries, where EnDev is actively promoting new energies. 2015 GIZ/Endev Liberia adapted its strategy to Ebola and post Ebola recovery and supplied over 50 clinics with solar fridges and more than 100 hospitals and health centres with light and other energies.
Today, the project supports Liberia by installing solar systems in schools and other institutions. The project is also active in Sierra Leone and Guinea and increasingly engages in the field of larger installations and mini-grids. Throughout its work, GIZ/EnDev enables women and men - from craftsmen to engineers - to be trained practically and theoretically, to learn and participate in the renewable energy sector.
The EnDev office building - 100% self-sufficiency based on solar energy:
Even during rainy season the EnDev office was running smoothly on solar. It has no generator and no gird connection.
The EnDev office’ solar system consists of a 3x600 watt system. A DC system for light and solar fridges and an AC system provides energy for computers, printers and all other office supplies that need AC, convertible energy. The office doors are always open for people to come, see and learn about all EnDev activities.
Data Collection. The project collects its data with questionnaires on smartphones through a particular developed App and a geographical information system. The goal is to collect jointly with Liberia’s Rural Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) and other stakeholders, data on renewable energy projects in Liberia and make them visible in a map on this webpage.
