The Liberian government and project developer Gigawatt Global Cooperatief U.A. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the financing and construction of a 10-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant in Monrovia.

The Energising Development Program (EnDev) provides solar lights for the purpose of evening adult literacy classes in Nimba County.

Eighteen communities in the Buu – Yao Administrative District are benefiting from the solar-powered lights.

The literacy classes are an opportunity to take the first leap in the education of beneficiaries whose education was interrupted by the civil war.

The drive to mitigate carbon emissions and deforestation in Liberia by using renewable energy has been a challenge over the last 10 years, as the postwar nation grapples with how to embrace the concept. On the one hand, there has been the limited expertise regarding design, build and maintenance. On the other hand, low budgets have scared many away from investing in natural energy sources that could pay for themselves in a relatively short amount of time – and reap cost savings for many more years to come.
