Solar System Installations for Health Facilities and Schools (EnDev)

GIZ/EnDev Liberia is involved in providing energy access support for three key sectors in Liberia: Energy, Health and Education. To strengthen the energy sector, EnDev trains electricians and students in solar technology. For clinics and schools in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, Endev has provided and installed forsera solar systems as part of the Post Ebola Support. Also, in collaboration with We Care Solar, EnDev technicians install solar suitcases in maternity wards. More and more, EnDev focuses on establishing a sustainable monitoring, maintenance and repair system for solar installations in public facilities.

Trainings

EnDev has a vast technical expertise in solar installation, maintenance and repair which is provided in various training sessions and workshops, internships and on-the-job experiences to electricians and students. EnDev also collaborates towards integrating a solar technology curriculum into the regular curriculum at various colleges and vocational schools.  

Installations

Several clinics and health centers in Liberia received solar vaccine fridges and solar lights.  The vaccine fridges are used as storage for vaccine, medicine and blood samples. Solar lights were placed in other clinics to enable services to be provided at night especially for delivery.  One clinic is now pumping water as a result to the solar pv installation.

Schools also benefited from the post-Ebola support. Special learning activities for adults are being conducted during the evening hours in most rural communities. These activities are being carried out by the community or supporting organizations. EnDev had provided lights to several schools, especially in the rural area, to enable the special learning program conduct classes during the evening hours or at night.

Monitoring, Maintenance and Repair

EnDev has developed a mobile App that can be used on smartphones to register, monitor and support solar installations. It can also be used for documenting repairs. This app directly provides the data for the solar installation map that is publicly available on this webportal.

Phone monitoring and a repair hotline is established to support solar powered facilities in solving small problems or informing about repair needs. In the long run, EnDev works towards a sustainable system fro monitoring, maintenance and repair of solar installations in public facilities.
