Why data collection?

GIZ/EnDev systematically collects data for its Monitoring every 6 months to gather and measure information from all actors in the renewable energy sector in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The aim is to get a complete picture about the improvements being made in this period and to analyze and evaluate the outcomes in this timeframe.

We encourage everybody to be a part of this process as it is a necessary condition to know what is going on in the sector for market development and development of business strategies. Another advantage is that we ensure to upload the shared information about e.g. solar installations on our maps on this website. Monitoring and visualizing the processes and developments of the renewable energy sector is very important for every Stakeholder as it attracts investors and donors.

We are aiming to facilitate this process with our new EnDev Apps for data collection for solar systems and cocoa dryers. Soon this app will be available in the app store for android devices and we encourage everybody to work with them. Basically, it is a way to register renewable energy sites in Liberia/Sierra Leone. The information will be uploaded through the app into our cloud, reviewed and placed on the maps of this website.

Moreover, the geospatial data collection and mapping of installations is essential to develop a maintenance and repair system for solar systems to guarantee their sustainability and a good reputation of solar energy in general.

Any individual company can benefit from participating in the data collection and use the app to analyze their own sales to identify user demand and market opportunities. In addition, a comprehensive accounting is of vital importance to proof a transparent and comprehensible performance in order to apply for grants and funding and be recommended for projects by donors.

This article gives a comprehensive overview of the results of our latest Monitoring from July to December 2017. The maps on our website cover the timeframe since 2014 which helps to integrate the following results into the broader picture.

Monitoring EnDev Liberia July-December 2017

We covered in our Monitoring for example all Solar Home Systems (SHS) being installed between July and December 2017 in Liberia in social institutions (e.g. schools, clinics, etc.). The following graph shows you how the 214 in total installed SHS are distributed among different types of social institution. More than half of the installations have been made in the health sector (clinics and hospitals) which shows the outstanding role of this sector when it comes to solar energy.

For the activities in the sector of Pico PV the graph shows how many Pico PV lamps/items have been sold in which county in Liberia. In total 2859 Pico PV products have been sold in this timeframe. Most of them were sold in Montserrado, Lofa and Grand Bassa.

From July to December 2017 886 clean cook stoves have been sold in total in Liberia. As the graph shows most of them were sold in Montserrado. This focus can be explained that so far most of the stove producers and retailers are based in this county.
