Solar Home Systems (SHS) are stand-alone photovoltaic systems that are cost-effective solutions to distribute power for lighting and small appliances in remote off-grid households. SHS are used to fulfil basic energy demands.
SHS usually operate on 12V or 24V DC (Direct Current) and have a charge controller inbuilt to prevent damage to the battery.
A SHS minimum configuration consists of:

  • A solar photovoltaic panel
  • Cables
  • Mounts
  • Switches
  • Battery pack with inbuilt charge controller
  • Lights
  • Socket to charge mobile phones

Additional features can be:

  • Fans
  • Radio
  • TV

Possible/Usual Installation of a SHS:

The PV panel is set up on the roof, optimally tilted in a 45° angle to exploit the sun radiation the best. The cables are put through the roof, reaching for the battery pack. The battery pack should be installed on the wall so it is ventilated and dry. From the battery pack the cables run to the appliances (lights, fans etc.…)
